Spooky Action at a Distance is an ongoing project by artist Stefani Bardin in which two vintage gum-ball machines from the 1950’s are retrofitted to dispense a series of actionable climate change “bites.”

Each bite is designed by a different high-profile chef and draws attention to the future of food systems by highlighting a food source that’s either a climate change “winner” or “loser.” Like a fortune cookie, the bite includes a fortune (an applicable prediction about the future of food’s environmental impact) and unlucky numbers (alarming statistics about the effects of global warming).

Participants are invited to feed a nickel into the gum-ball machine to procure the digestible bite of food and in some instances less digestible bite of information for them to take out into the world, extending the experience and more importantly the conversation.
